Qīlóngzhū #19

Qīlóngzhū, known internationally as Dragon Ball, began its serialized run in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1984 under the creative direction of Akira Toriyama. Issue #19 belongs to the formative early chapters of the series, a period defined by Toriyama's shift from his previous comedic style toward an adventure-driven narrative inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. This specific segment of the story features the early dynamic between Goku and Bulma as they navigate the search for the Dragon Balls, establishing the whimsical yet action-oriented tone that would define the franchise's global legacy.

The character designs and panel layouts were executed by Toriyama himself, who sought to blend slapstick humor with creative martial arts choreography. By the time these early chapters reached publication, Toriyama's influence on the manga industry was already growing due to his distinct, clean linework and expressive character shorthand. While the initial reception was modest compared to the later, combat-heavy Z era, this period is now widely regarded by critics as essential for establishing the foundational world-building and character motivations that anchored the series for decades.
