Quantum & Woody #1

Quantum & Woody #1 was published in 1997 by Acclaim Comics, emerging during a period when the publisher was attempting to revitalize the Valiant Comics universe they had recently acquired. Created by writer Christopher Priest and artist M.D. Bright, the series was designed as a subversive take on the buddy-cop superhero trope. The narrative focused on the fractured relationship between two adoptive brothers—one white and one black—who are forced to maintain physical proximity to avoid dissipating into energy, a conceit that allowed Priest to explore complex social dynamics alongside traditional comic book action.

The creative direction sought to balance genuine character tension with a irreverent, meta-fictional sense of humor that set it apart from the more earnest superhero titles of the decade. M.D. Bright’s clean, cinematic style provided a grounded visual anchor for the surrealist plot points and the duo's constant bickering. While the series did not achieve the same mainstream saturation as titles from the industry leaders at the time, it gained a devoted cult following for its sharp dialogue, unconventional structure, and its ability to blend genuine pathos with comedic absurdity.
