Quantum & Woody #21

Quantum & Woody #21, published in 2014 by Valiant Entertainment, serves as a pivotal installment in the relaunch of the cult-favorite superhero duo. Created originally by Christopher Priest and M.D. Bright in the late 1990s, the characters were revived during the 'Valiant Next' era, with this specific arc written by James Asmus and illustrated by Ming Doyle. The series maintained its signature blend of dysfunctional superhero comedy and metafictional commentary, positioning the characters as a bickering pair bound by unstable energy powers.

The creative direction for this series focused on modernizing the protagonists while preserving the irreverent tone established in the original run. Ming Doyle’s contributions to the visuals during this period were noted for their expressive character work and dynamic staging, which helped differentiate the title from more traditional gritty superhero fare. By this point in the 2014 run, the narrative had deepened the complex relationship between Eric and Woody, earning critical appreciation for its ability to balance absurd humor with surprisingly poignant character stakes.
