Sam Slade Robo-Hunter #29

Sam Slade Robo-Hunter debuted in the pages of the British science fiction anthology 2000 AD in 1978. Conceived by writer John Wagner and artist Ian Gibson, the series was designed as a satirical take on the hard-boiled detective genre, reimagined within a world overrun by malfunctioning, eccentric robots. Issue 29 appeared during a period when the strip had established itself as a staple of the publication, celebrated for Gibson's intricate, detailed line work and Wagner’s blend of slapstick humor and cynicism.

The design of the Robo-Hunter strips from this era is iconic for its visual density and the distinct, spindly characterizations that set the tone for the series' long-running success. Readers responded strongly to the balance between the gritty, futuristic settings and the absurdity of the plots, which often pitted Slade against the illogical nature of his mechanical adversaries. This issue remains a representative artifact of the peak British comics boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
