Sam Slade Robo-Hunter #3

Sam Slade: Robo-Hunter premiered in the British science fiction anthology 2000 AD in 1978. Created by writer John Wagner and artist Ian Gibson, the series was designed as a satirical take on the hard-boiled detective genre, transplanting the aesthetic of a gritty private investigator into a future obsessed with dysfunctional robots. Issue 3 features the continued exploits of Slade, a cynical bounty hunter tasked with disposing of malfunctioning or dangerous droids in a world where artificial intelligence is ubiquitous yet notoriously unreliable.

The visual identity of the series was largely defined by Ian Gibson’s expressive, highly detailed line work, which emphasized the chaotic and cluttered nature of a robot-filled future. His ability to render complex mechanical structures alongside humorous, expressive characters became a hallmark of the strip. Upon its debut, the series was well-received by 2000 AD readers for its sharp, irreverent humor and its clever subversion of the standard sci-fi tropes prevalent in late 1970s British comics.
