Where it came from
Secret Origins #27, published by DC Comics in 1988, serves as a quintessential entry in the series that aimed to re-establish and update the backstories of various heroes following the massive continuity reset of Crisis on Infinite Earths. This specific issue is notable for focusing on the characters of Martian Manhunter and the Doom Patrol, reflecting the editorial desire to ground eccentric Silver Age concepts within a more modern, psychological framework during the late 1980s.
The issue features work by notable industry contributors including writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Joe Staton. The design approach focuses on the melancholic and displaced nature of J'onn J'onzz, utilizing a narrative style that emphasizes introspective storytelling over pure action. It was received by readers as a respectful modernization that honored the character's original extraterrestrial roots while aligning his motivations with the more somber tone prevalent in DC's late 80s publication slate.
