Secret Origins #30

Secret Origins number 30 was published by DC Comics in September 1988, part of an anthology series dedicated to reimagining or clarifying the histories of various characters within the DC Universe. This specific issue is notable for featuring the origin story of the Phantom Stranger, a mysterious and enigmatic figure whose true nature has remained one of the publisher's longest-running narrative puzzles.

The issue was written by Dan Mishkin and illustrated by Ernie Colón, who were tasked with providing a definitive account for a character defined by his lack of a clear backstory. The creative team aimed to ground the Phantom Stranger in a gothic, supernatural atmosphere that honored his mid-century roots while weaving him into the broader historical tapestry of the DC mythos, ultimately receiving a positive reception from readers who appreciated the attempt to reconcile the character's cryptic presence with an established origin.
