Where it came from
Secrets of Haunted House was a long-running horror anthology series published by DC Comics during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Issue number 12, released in the late summer of 1978, was part of a broader era for DC in which they sought to compete with the darker, more visceral horror comics popularized by publishers like Warren. The series was defined by its host-driven narrative structure, a staple of the genre that allowed for short, self-contained tales of the macabre.
The issue features work from a roster of talent typical of the period's house style, emphasizing atmospheric storytelling and dramatic illustrations to elevate the short scripts. The editorial direction aimed to balance classic eerie aesthetics with the trending sensibilities of bronze-age comic horror. Like many of its counterparts in the DC mystery line, it serves as a snapshot of the industry's attempt to maintain the legacy of horror comics while navigating the post-Comics Code Authority creative landscape.
