Secrets of Haunted House #45

Secrets of Haunted House was a long-running anthology series published by DC Comics during the late 1970s and early 1980s, a period when the publisher leaned heavily into the horror and supernatural genres to compete with the success of rivals like Warren Publishing. Issue number 45, released in early 1982, serves as a quintessential example of the series' format, which relied on twist-ending short stories hosted by a supernatural narrator. By this stage in the title's lifecycle, the stories often balanced traditional gothic tropes with the contemporary, slightly more cynical sensibilities of early 80s comic storytelling.

The creative direction of the series was defined by a rotating cast of DC house artists and writers, focusing on atmosphere and quick, impactful narratives rather than character continuity. The art in issue 45 reflects the standard house style of the era, utilizing dense ink work to establish a somber, eerie tone consistent with DC's other horror anthologies of the time. While these books were initially received as reliable mid-tier entertainment for horror enthusiasts, they have since gained historical value as artifacts of the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths DC era, appreciated by collectors for their representative cover art and experimental short-form writing.
