Sergio Aragonés Groo the Wanderer #98

Groo the Wanderer #98, published by Image Comics in 1995, represents a transitional chapter in the storied history of Sergio Aragonés' dim-witted but dangerous barbarian. Created in 1982 alongside writer Mark Evanier, the character became a cult sensation for his ability to cause catastrophic destruction while merely attempting to be helpful. By the time this issue was released, the series had moved from Marvel's Epic imprint to Image, reflecting the industry-wide shift toward independent creator-owned titles during the mid-nineties.

The visual identity of the comic is defined entirely by Aragonés' kinetic, fluid cartooning style, which eschews traditional superhero realism in favor of expressive, gag-heavy layouts. Mark Evanier’s scripts complemented this by grounding the slapstick in sophisticated satire, often poking fun at fantasy tropes and the comic industry itself. Issue #98 maintains this ethos, serving as a testament to the longevity of the duo's partnership, which is recognized as one of the longest-running collaborations in comic book history.
