Sergio Aragonés Groo the Wanderer #97

Groo the Wanderer issue 97 was published in 1993, arriving during the long-running Image Comics tenure of the series. Created by legendary cartoonist Sergio Aragonés and writer Mark Evanier, the comic originated as a parody of sword-and-sorcery tropes, centered on the well-meaning but dim-witted barbarian Groo. By the time this issue was released, the series had already established a devoted cult following for its blend of slapstick comedy, intricate background gags, and sharp social satire.

The visual identity of this issue remains rooted in Aragonés’s signature fluid, expressive style, characterized by his dense, wordless background details that reward careful observation. As one of the later installments in the Image run, this issue reflects the established creative synergy between Aragonés and Evanier, who often utilized the medium to comment on the state of the comic book industry itself. It was received as a reliable staple of independent humor comics, sustaining a loyal readership through its consistent artistic quality and irreverent tone.
