Where it came from
Star Wars Tales #10 was released in 2001 by Dark Horse Comics as part of an anthology series designed to explore corners of the Star Wars universe outside the constraints of the main cinematic timeline. This specific issue is widely noted by fans and critics for containing the story 'Skippy the Jedi Droid,' a humorous and tongue-in-cheek narrative that reimagines the R5-D4 droid from A New Hope as a Force-sensitive being who intentionally malfunctions to ensure R2-D2 reaches Luke Skywalker.
The creative team behind this issue utilized the anthology format to experiment with varied artistic styles and non-canonical storytelling, a hallmark of the Tales series. While the inclusion of the 'Skippy' story drew mixed reactions—ranging from amusement to polarizing debate regarding the lore—the issue remains a definitive example of the whimsical, experimental spirit that characterized Dark Horse’s tenure with the Star Wars license during the early 2000s.
