Where it came from
Strikeforce: Morituri #22, released in the late 1980s, serves as a pivotal installment in the Marvel Comics series created by Peter B. Gillis and Brent Anderson. The series was conceptualized during a period of experimentation at Marvel, presenting a grounded and fatalistic science fiction premise where human soldiers are given superpowers to defend Earth against an alien invasion, knowing that the transformation process will inevitably kill them within a year.
The artwork for this issue maintains the gritty, cinematic aesthetic established by Brent Anderson, whose visual storytelling was instrumental in defining the book's somber tone. The series is frequently cited by critics and comic historians for its departure from traditional superhero tropes, focusing on the existential dread and the limited lifespan of its protagonists rather than the standard victory narrative.
