Strikeforce: Morituri #19

Strikeforce: Morituri was launched by Marvel Comics in 1986, emerging during a period when the publisher was experimenting with more mature, science-fiction-oriented storytelling. Created by writer Peter B. Gillis and artist Brent Anderson, the series introduced a grim premise: Earth is under alien occupation, and humanity develops a technology to grant superpowers to volunteers, though the process guarantees they will die within a year. Issue number 19, published in 1988, serves as a pivotal chapter in this narrative arc, continuing to explore the psychological toll and impending mortality faced by the core characters.

The visual identity of the series was defined by a stark, high-stakes aesthetic that departed from the traditional caped-hero archetype. Brent Anderson’s design work focused on the physical and emotional degradation of the characters, reflecting the fatalistic nature of the script. Upon release, the series garnered a dedicated cult following, praised for its willingness to subvert comic tropes by making character death a central, inescapable plot device rather than a temporary narrative tactic.
