Where it came from
Strikeforce: Morituri #2, published by Marvel Comics in 1986, serves as the second chapter in Peter B. Gillis and Brent Anderson's innovative science fiction series. The title was conceived during a period when Marvel sought to push the boundaries of mature storytelling, exploring a premise where humanity gains superpowers to fight an alien occupation, but at the cost of inevitable, premature death. This issue continues the early character development and visceral stakes that defined the series as a cult classic of the mid-eighties.
The visual identity of the series was driven by Brent Anderson's dynamic layouts, which were designed to emphasize the transient, tragic nature of the heroes. The artwork was well-received for its grounded approach to a high-concept sci-fi narrative, distinguishing the title from the more traditional superhero fare on newsstands at the time. The series remains highly regarded for its thematic commitment to the 'Morituri effect,' which forced its protagonists to confront their own mortality in every issue.
