The Amazing Spider-Man #549

Published in 2008, The Amazing Spider-Man #549 serves as the second installment of the 'Brand New Day' era, specifically the 'Swing Shift' arc. This period followed the controversial 'One More Day' storyline, which effectively reset Spider-Man’s continuity by erasing his marriage to Mary Jane Watson. The narrative was designed to return the character to his roots as a struggling, single freelance photographer, aiming to reinvigorate the series through a rotating creative team and a faster, bi-weekly publishing schedule.

The issue features cover art by Steve McNiven and interior work by artist Phil Jimenez and writer Dan Slott. Jimenez utilized a dynamic, classic superhero aesthetic to ground the character within the new editorial direction, focusing on the immediate aftermath of Peter Parker’s status quo shift. The creative team aimed to balance the dark, grounded reality of Peter's new life with the high-energy, witty action that defined the character’s history, and it was generally received by readers as a successful transition into the updated status quo.
