The Books of Magic #45

The Books of Magic #45 was published in 1998 as part of the long-running Vertigo series that spun out of Neil Gaiman’s original 1990 miniseries. By this stage in the run, the title had shifted from its initial focus on Timothy Hunter’s origin to exploring the darker, more complex realities of the magical universe. The series was designed to push the boundaries of traditional fantasy comics, blending mythic storytelling with the gritty, grounded aesthetic that characterized the Vertigo imprint during its most influential decade.

The issue features work by writer Dylan Horrocks and artist David Hopkins, who were tasked with maintaining the series' reputation for philosophical depth and visual experimentation. During this period, the creative team sought to evolve Timothy Hunter's character from a wide-eyed protagonist into a young man grappling with the heavy burden of his destiny. While the issue served as a standard entry in a lengthy monthly run, it remains a notable example of late-nineties mature-audience fantasy, valued by collectors for its contribution to the expanded DC/Vertigo magical mythos.
