Where it came from
The Books of Magic #42, published in 1997, is part of the long-running Vertigo series that spun out of Neil Gaiman’s original 1990 miniseries. By this point in the series' history, the narrative had transitioned away from Gaiman's initial vision to explore the broader mystical foundations of the DC Universe, focusing on the protagonist Timothy Hunter as he navigated his complex destiny as a powerful mage in training.
This specific issue features the work of writer Peter Gross and artist Dean Ormston, who were instrumental in maintaining the dark, atmospheric tone characteristic of the Vertigo imprint during the late 1990s. The issue contributed to the ongoing character development of Timothy Hunter, reflecting the creative team's focus on blending adolescent coming-of-age themes with gritty supernatural storytelling, a hallmark of the title's middle-run success.
