The Books of Magic #60

The Books of Magic, launched in 1993, served as a cornerstone of the Vertigo imprint, exploring the intersection of modern youth culture and ancient occult traditions. Issue #60, published in 1999, falls toward the latter half of the series' original 75-issue run. During this period, the narrative focused on the maturing protagonist Timothy Hunter, moving away from the whimsical tone of the original Neil Gaiman miniseries to address the darker, more cynical realities of magical adolescence and the complexities of destiny.

This issue reflects the collaborative editorial and creative efforts of the Vertigo team, who aimed to maintain a consistent atmosphere of urban fantasy. The visual direction during this era prioritized a somber, atmospheric aesthetic, utilizing illustrative techniques intended to ground the ethereal nature of the plot within a gritty, contemporary reality. It remains a representative example of how the series transitioned from an experimental project into an established staple of late-nineties mature-reader comics.
