Where it came from
Published in 1999 as part of the Vertigo imprint, The Books of Magic #59 was a late-run installment in the ongoing series that followed the maturation of Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful magician. This issue arrived during a period of transition for the series, which had been established by Neil Gaiman as a modern exploration of myth, folklore, and the consequences of wielding occult power.
The issue features artwork by Peter Gross and Dean Ormston, with scripts contributed by Dylan Horrocks, who steered the narrative toward more grounded, character-driven themes. The creative team aimed to maintain the series' reputation for blending dark fantasy with the mundane struggles of adolescence. While the original Gaiman miniseries remains the cultural touchstone for the franchise, the subsequent monthly series, including this issue, is respected for its consistency in expanding the lore of the Vertigo-DC magical universe.
