The Books of Magic #62

The Books of Magic, originally launched as a four-issue miniseries by Neil Gaiman in 1990, eventually expanded into a long-running monthly series under DC Comics' Vertigo imprint. Issue #62, published in late 1999, falls within the later years of the series' original seventy-five-issue run. During this period, the narrative focused on the maturation of Timothy Hunter, the young protagonist destined to become the world's most powerful magician, as he grappled with the increasingly dark and surreal consequences of his magical education.

The creative direction for this era of the series was largely shaped by writers like Peter Gross and John Ney Rieber, who inherited the mantle after Gaiman's departure. The artistic style of the late nineties issues maintained the moody, atmospheric aesthetic established by the imprint, utilizing a blend of traditional fantasy tropes and contemporary grit. This specific issue is characteristic of the series' effort to weave intricate, often melancholic storylines that explored the isolation of a teenage boy caught between competing factions of mystical power.
