The Books of Magic #70

The Books of Magic #70 was published by DC Comics under the Vertigo imprint in October 2000. It serves as part of a long-running series created by Neil Gaiman that explores the intersection of myth, folklore, and modern-day teenage angst through the character of Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's greatest magician. This specific issue arrived during the series' later years, a period defined by a shifting creative team and a more introspective, character-driven focus as the narrative navigated the challenges of maintaining a legacy title in the competitive comic market of the early 2000s.

The issue features artwork and narrative contributions consistent with the established visual identity of the series, which emphasized surrealism, ethereal atmosphere, and a darker, grittier urban fantasy aesthetic. While the title originally launched as a prestige miniseries, the ongoing series became known for its literary depth and its exploration of the cost of magic. By the time this issue was released, the creative team aimed to conclude arcs that further developed Hunter's complicated relationship with his destiny, reflecting the broader Vertigo philosophy of treating comics as adult-oriented literary fiction.
