The Books of Magic #72

The Books of Magic #72, published in 2000, sits toward the end of the original ongoing series launched under DC Comics' Vertigo imprint. Developed in the wake of Neil Gaiman’s seminal 1990 miniseries, the ongoing title explored the maturation of Timothy Hunter, a young boy destined to become the world's most powerful mage. By the time issue #72 arrived, the series had evolved through various creative runs, maintaining a dark, sophisticated tone that characterized the Vertigo brand at the turn of the millennium.

This issue features creative contributions consistent with the later period of the series, focusing on the psychological and mystical challenges faced by Tim Hunter as he grappled with his inevitable path. The series was noted for its departure from traditional superhero tropes, instead favoring atmospheric storytelling and the exploration of folklore and urban fantasy. While the early issues of the series drew significant critical acclaim for their visual experimentation, the later chapters like #72 are appreciated by collectors for their role in concluding a lengthy, ambitious narrative arc.
