The Books of Magic #71

The Books of Magic #71, published in 2000, occupies a unique position in the post-Neil Gaiman era of the Vertigo imprint. Following the conclusion of the original four-issue miniseries and the subsequent ongoing series, this issue represents the tail end of the title's tenure. It was crafted during a period when Vertigo sought to maintain the legacy of Timothy Hunter, the young protagonist destined to become a powerful mage, while transitioning through various creative voices who worked to reconcile the character's whimsical origins with the darker, more mature tone of the imprint's late nineties catalog.

The creative direction for this period of the series often emphasized the character's struggle with his inevitable fate, moving away from the lighthearted magical exploration of the early days toward psychological introspection. The illustrative style throughout the later issues was intended to evoke an atmosphere of foreboding and moral ambiguity. While the series eventually concluded with issue #75, issue #71 remains a snapshot of the effort to sustain a complex, long-form narrative in the competitive landscape of the comics industry at the turn of the millennium.
