The Fury of Firestorm #27

Published by DC Comics in September 1984, The Fury of Firestorm #27 arrived during a pivotal era for the character under the creative guidance of writer Gerry Conway and artist Rafael Kayanan. This issue sits within a long-running series that sought to redefine the nuclear-powered hero, balancing his dual identity as Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein with the increasingly complex political and environmental tensions of the mid-1980s. The narrative focus of this period often explored the physical and psychological toll of the matrix, reflecting a broader trend in DC's catalog at the time to ground fantastical superheroes in more relatable, high-stakes human struggles.

The cover art and interior illustrations of this era were characterized by a dynamic, illustrative style that emphasized the kinetic nature of Firestorm's transmutation abilities. Rafael Kayanan’s work was instrumental in establishing the visual vocabulary for the character’s volatile power set, which resonated with readers who appreciated the blend of traditional superhero spectacle with the soap-opera style character development that Conway brought to the title. The issue was received as a steady contribution to the ongoing Firestorm mythos, maintaining the character's presence in the DC Universe throughout the decade.
