The Fury of Firestorm #29

The Fury of Firestorm #29, published in November 1984, arrived during a pivotal period for DC Comics as the publisher navigated the transition between traditional superhero narratives and the grittier, more experimental storytelling that would define the mid-1980s. Written by Gerry Conway with cover art by Rafael Kayanan, the issue continues the complex character study of Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein, who shared a physical form as the nuclear-powered hero. This specific era of the title is often noted by historians for its focus on the human dilemmas of the dual protagonists and its integration into the wider DC Universe continuity.

The design and narrative direction were guided by Conway’s long-standing stewardship of the character, aiming to balance high-stakes science fiction elements with the grounded teenage struggles of Ronnie Raymond. Kayanan’s illustrations during this period were praised for their clean, dynamic aesthetic which fit the aesthetic standards of DC's mid-80s output. While not the most famous issue of the run, it serves as a representative example of the publisher’s effort to maintain character-driven long-form storytelling prior to the company-wide continuity reset initiated by Crisis on Infinite Earths.
