The Fury of Firestorm #30

The Fury of Firestorm #30, published in December 1984, arrived during a period where DC Comics was exploring more grounded, sociopolitical themes within its superhero narratives. Written by Gerry Conway with interior art by Rafael Kayanan, this issue is part of a series that revitalized the character of Firestorm by emphasizing the dual-natured conflict between Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein. This specific era of the title is often noted by historians for its attempt to blend high-stakes nuclear themes with the evolving interpersonal dynamics of its lead characters.

The cover art for this issue, like much of the series' aesthetic during the mid-eighties, leaned into the bold, dramatic compositions typical of the Bronze Age transitioning into the Modern Age of comics. Rafael Kayanan’s work on this run was intended to convey the volatility of the Firestorm matrix, matching the series' central premise of elemental instability. Upon release, the issue was received as a standard installment of a stable DC title, valued by contemporary readers for maintaining the internal consistency and character-driven storytelling that Gerry Conway had cultivated throughout his long tenure on the series.
