The Fury of Firestorm #56

The Fury of Firestorm #56, published in February 1987, emerged during a transitional period for the character within the DC Universe. Written by Gerry Conway and illustrated by Joe Brozowski and Sal Buscema, the issue fits into the series' long-running exploration of the dual nature of Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein. At this stage in the title’s publication history, the creative team focused on blending high-stakes superhero action with the complex, often volatile interpersonal dynamics that defined the series since its inception.

The art style of the mid-1980s Firestorm run often reflected the transition from the character's earlier conceptual roots toward a more grounded, character-driven narrative. The work of Brozowski and Buscema aimed to maintain the visual energy of the Nuclear Man's powers while emphasizing the emotional toll of his fragmented existence. The series was generally well-regarded by fans of DC's secondary tier of heroes for its willingness to experiment with the protagonist's identity and the unique physics-based nature of his abilities.
