The Fury of Firestorm #59

Published by DC Comics in May 1987, The Fury of Firestorm #59 represents a pivotal moment in the character's publication history. During this era, the series was navigating the aftermath of the Crisis on Infinite Earths, with writer John Ostrander taking the helm to transition Firestorm from a traditional superhero title into a more complex, politically charged narrative. This specific issue is notable for its exploration of Ronnie Raymond's internal conflicts and the growing tension between the dual consciousness of the character.

The cover art and interior work from this period often emphasized a gritty, modern aesthetic that moved away from the more lighthearted Silver Age roots of the nuclear hero. Ostrander, often working with artists like Joe Brozowski, aimed to ground the character in human reality, focusing on the heavy burden of god-like power. This direction was generally well-received by readers of the late 1980s who appreciated DC's shift toward more mature, character-driven storytelling, cementing this issue's place as a transitional bridge in the Firestorm mythos.
