Where it came from
Published in September 1962, The Incredible Hulk #3 was the final issue of the character's original short-lived series before he transitioned into a recurring role in other Marvel titles. Created by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby, the issue was produced during a period of rapid experimentation for Marvel, as the publisher sought to refine the Hulk's identity by pivoting him from a grey-skinned monster into the iconic green-skinned figure readers recognize today.
The narrative follows the Hulk as he encounters the villainous Ringmaster and his Circus of Crime, a storyline that reflects the era's fascination with eclectic, trope-driven pulp threats. Jack Kirby’s dynamic art style brought a sense of kinetic energy and pathos to the character, solidifying the Hulk’s status as a tragic, misunderstood figure. While the series was cancelled shortly after this issue due to middling sales at the time, it ultimately served as a foundational building block for the expanded Marvel Universe.
