Where it came from
The Incredible Hulk #111 was published by Marvel Comics in December 2008, serving as part of the overarching 'Planet Hulk' and 'World War Hulk' narrative era. This issue, titled 'The Incredible Hercules: Assault on New Olympus,' features the writing of Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, with interior art by Khoi Pham. It explores the complex post-war dynamic between the Hulk and Hercules, shifting the tone toward a more mythological, buddy-comedy adventure that contrasted with the grim, militaristic atmosphere of the preceding Hulk storylines.
The design of the cover, illustrated by Ed McGuinness, adheres to the bold, hyper-stylized aesthetic that defined Marvel's late-2000s house style. McGuinness, known for his ability to render high-octane action with rounded, muscular anatomy, sought to emphasize the raw physical power of the protagonists. The issue was generally well-received by fans of the era for its successful pivot into humor and team-up dynamics, helping to solidify the fan-favorite partnership between Hulk and Hercules that would remain a staple of the series for several years.
