The Incredible Hulk #333

The Incredible Hulk #333, published in July 1987, emerged during a pivotal era for the character as writer Peter David began his definitive, lengthy tenure on the title. This specific issue features art by Todd McFarlane, capturing a period when the Hulk was in his gray incarnation—a shift from the traditional green persona that allowed for more cynical, complex storytelling. The narrative follows the Hulk as he navigates the high-stakes environment of the Pantheon and internal conflicts, reflecting the darker, more character-driven tone that David established for the series.

Todd McFarlane's contribution to this issue is often highlighted by collectors for his distinctive, kinetic style that was beginning to redefine Marvel's aesthetic in the late eighties. His rendering of the Hulk emphasized a brooding, less hulking physique, which complemented the shifting status quo of the character. At the time of its release, the issue was received as part of a fresh creative direction that helped revitalize the series, eventually setting the stage for the character's profound evolution in the following decade.
