The Incredible Hulk #337

The Incredible Hulk #337, published in November 1987, arrived during a transformative period for the series under the guidance of writer Peter David. This issue serves as a pivotal installment in the 'Grey Hulk' era, where the character’s persona shifted to a more calculating, cynical, and morally ambiguous version of his former self. David’s long-running tenure on the title is widely credited with revitalizing the Hulk by focusing on complex psychological character development rather than purely physical conflicts, a departure that fundamentally reshaped the character's legacy in modern comics.

The artwork for this era was defined by Todd McFarlane, whose dynamic and hyper-detailed style began to draw significant attention during this run. McFarlane’s visual approach, characterized by expressive anatomy and intricate ink lines, brought a heightened sense of intensity to the Hulk’s encounters. The creative synergy between David’s subversive writing and McFarlane’s burgeoning aesthetic helped define the late 1980s Marvel style, solidifying this issue as a sought-after milestone for collectors interested in the evolution of both the character and the artist’s influential career.
