The Incredible Hulk #353

The Incredible Hulk #353 was published by Marvel Comics in February 1989, arriving during the long-running tenure of writer Peter David. This era of the series is widely regarded by fans and critics for its intellectual approach to the character, moving beyond simple brawls to explore the complex, shifting identities of Bruce Banner. The issue fits into the 'Gray Hulk' period, where the character functioned as a cynical, intelligent Las Vegas enforcer rather than a mindless monster, a creative direction that helped revitalize the title.

The issue features cover art and interior pencils by Jeff Purves, whose distinct, gritty, and somewhat distorted style defined the visual identity of the book during this specific timeframe. His approach leaned into the psychological tension of the narrative, favoring expressive, unusual character anatomy over standard superhero tropes. Upon release, this arc was well-received for maintaining the momentum of David's character-driven scripts, grounding the fantastic elements of the Hulk in a grounded, noir-inspired atmosphere.
