Where it came from
The Incredible Hulk Annual #18 was released in 1994 as part of the Marvel Annuals crossover event titled 'The Subterranean Wars'. During this era, Marvel utilized its annual publications to host interconnected stories that forced disparate characters into shared narratives, with this specific issue featuring art by Steve Geiger and writing by Dan Slott and others. The story follows the Hulk as he navigates political unrest and warfare within the subterranean kingdom of Tyrannus, aligning with the broader 1990s trend of ambitious, multi-title story arcs.
The design of the issue reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of mid-90s comic book production, characterized by dynamic, high-energy compositions and the integration of foil-embossed covers which were popular at the time. The creative team aimed to blend the Hulk’s traditional brute-force storytelling with complex, world-building elements of the Marvel underground. While received as a standard entry in the crossover event, it remains a notable piece for completists of the Hulk’s publication history and fans of 1990s Marvel editorial styles.
