Where it came from
The Infinity Gauntlet #3, released in August 1991, serves as the centerpiece of Marvel Comics' landmark limited series written by Jim Starlin. Following the events of the first two issues, this installment deepens the conflict between the nihilistic Titan Thanos and the remaining heroes of the Marvel Universe. The series was designed to explore themes of omnipotence and existential dread, building upon Starlin's long-term cosmic narratives that had been developing in various titles throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
The interior artwork for the issue was provided by Ron Lim, who assumed duties from George Pérez. Lim's aesthetic was instrumental in establishing the visual language of the cosmic Marvel era, favoring dynamic compositions that could convey the scale of intergalactic battles. The series was critically well-received at the time of its release, eventually becoming a cornerstone of Marvel's crossover event history and significantly influencing the narrative trajectory of the Marvel Cinematic Universe decades later.
