The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #1

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #1 was released in 1999 as the debut issue of a limited series published by America's Best Comics, an imprint of WildStorm. Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Kevin O'Neill, the series was conceived as a Victorian-era pastiche that united iconic literary characters such as Mina Murray, Captain Nemo, and Allan Quatermain into a unified covert operations team. The project served as a commentary on the nature of pop-culture archetypes and the evolution of 19th-century adventure literature.

Kevin O'Neill's visual style was instrumental in defining the tone of the series, utilizing dense, intricate panel layouts and a gritty, atmospheric aesthetic that grounded the fantastical elements of the narrative. Upon its release, the issue was widely acclaimed for its clever subversion of classic fiction and its rich, layered world-building. It solidified the partnership between Moore and O'Neill, leading to a long-running franchise that expanded the literary universe significantly beyond its initial premise.
