The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #4

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #4, released in 1999 as part of the initial six-issue miniseries, was created by writer Alan Moore and artist Kevin O'Neill. Published by America's Best Comics, an imprint of WildStorm, the series emerged from Moore's desire to craft a Victorian-era pastiche that assembled iconic figures from 19th-century literature—such as Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, and Mina Murray—into a covert operations team. This issue specifically functions as a pivotal point in the first volume's narrative, furthering the tension between the protagonists and the mysterious Professor Moriarty.

Kevin O'Neill’s distinct, highly detailed aesthetic was instrumental in grounding the fantastical elements of the story in a gritty, textured version of London. The visual style, characterized by dense cross-hatching and a slightly grotesque edge, was purposefully designed to contrast with the period-appropriate gentlemanly archetypes of the characters. Upon its release, the issue was widely praised for its literary depth and the synergy between Moore's complex plotting and O'Neill's subversive artistic sensibilities, helping to solidify the series as a landmark in postmodern comic book storytelling.
