The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #5

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume One, issue #5, was published by America's Best Comics in 1999. Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Kevin O'Neill, the series was conceived as a literary pastiche that brought together iconic Victorian-era fictional characters, such as Allan Quatermain and Mina Murray, into a single shared universe. This issue serves as the penultimate chapter of the first volume, depicting the group's frantic attempts to thwart Fu Manchu’s control over the London underworld while exploring the darker undercurrents of empire and industrialization.

Kevin O'Neill’s distinct, highly detailed aesthetic was chosen to ground the fantastical elements of Moore’s narrative in a grime-streaked, period-accurate version of London. The art style, characterized by dense cross-hatching and elaborate architectural renderings, was intended to evoke the sensation of reading a classic British penny dreadful. Upon release, the series was widely lauded for its intellectual depth and subversion of genre tropes, establishing a complex legacy that defined the 'literary comic' movement of the late 1990s.
