Where it came from
Released as part of the Free Comic Book Day initiative in 2024, this issue serves as a bridge between the established narratives of the Avatar universe and the younger generation of waterbenders. Dark Horse Comics produced the title to maintain engagement with the Legend of Korra fan base while expanding the personal history of Kya, the daughter of Aang and Katara, placing her in a narrative context that explores her upbringing and developing mastery of waterbending.
The comic was written by Kiely Sweatt with illustrations by Monica Kubina and others, who aimed to mirror the established animation aesthetic of the original series while leaning into the intimacy of a standalone character study. It was generally well-received by the comics community for its commitment to character-driven storytelling, providing fans with a deeper look at the legacy of Aang's children in the years following the main series arc.
