Where it came from
The Maxx #1 was published by Image Comics in March 1993, emerging during the independent comics boom of the early nineties. Created, written, and illustrated by Sam Kieth, the series serves as a psychological exploration of the boundaries between reality and subconscious fantasy. Kieth, known for his distinctively angular and moody artistic style, intended to create a character that straddled the line between a traditional superhero and a deeply troubled soul suffering from trauma.
The character's design is heavily influenced by Kieth’s desire to manifest psychological symbolism visually. The Maxx exists simultaneously in a harsh urban reality and a vibrant, dream-like realm called 'the Outback.' The work was received as a uniquely surreal entry into the superhero genre, eventually leading to a cult-classic animated series on MTV that solidified its legacy as a seminal work of indie-comics surrealism.
