The Marvel Saga The Official History of the Marvel Universe #13

Marvel Saga was launched in 1985 as a recurring reference series intended to chronicle the complex, sprawling history of the Marvel Universe in chronological order. Edited by Peter Sanderson, the series functioned as a comprehensive index that synthesized decades of disparate narratives into a singular, cohesive timeline. Issue #13, published in late 1986, focused on the evolving history of the X-Men and the development of the mutant corner of the Marvel mythos, serving as both a refresher for long-time readers and an entry point for newcomers.

The visual design of the series relied heavily on the reuse of classic panels and iconic cover art, curated to illustrate the events described in the text. This archival approach was highly regarded by readers of the era, who valued the meticulous research and the editorial effort to resolve inconsistencies across various titles. While it was primarily a functional publication rather than a showcase for new creative talent, it remains a notable artifact of 1980s comic book culture and a precursor to the comprehensive encyclopedias and digital databases that would follow.
