Where it came from
Published in June 1983, The New Adventures of Superboy #42 arrived during a period when DC Comics was experimenting with the tone of their boy-of-steel narratives. This specific issue features a cover by Kurt Schaffenberger, an artist deeply associated with the Superman family of titles, who sought to maintain the classic, approachable aesthetic that defined the Superboy character throughout the Bronze Age of comics.
The story within centers on the youth of Clark Kent in Smallville, a hallmark of the series' mission to explore his formative experiences before fully embracing the Superman mantle. While the New Adventures series eventually concluded to make way for the post-Crisis DC universe, issues from this run are remembered by collectors for their commitment to the traditional superhero mythos and the clean, definitive illustration styles of artists like Schaffenberger and his contemporaries.
