Where it came from
Published by DC Comics in October 1983, The New Adventures of Superboy #46 arrived during the twilight years of the title, which focused on the teenage exploits of Clark Kent in Smallville. This specific issue is part of the long-running tradition of Golden and Silver Age legacy characters being reimagined for a modern audience, capturing the nostalgic, lighthearted tone of mid-century superhero stories while leaning into the more character-driven narratives of the early 1980s.
The creative team for this issue featured writer Paul Kupperberg and artist Kurt Schaffenberger. Schaffenberger, often cited as one of the definitive illustrators of the Superman family of titles, was known for a clean, classic aesthetic that maintained the wholesome identity of the character. The issue reflects the editorial direction of the era, which aimed to preserve the innocence of the Superboy mythos even as the broader DC Universe began to undergo significant tonal shifts leading up to the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
