The Pink Panther #49

The Pink Panther comic series was published by Gold Key Comics, an imprint known for its television and animation tie-ins throughout the mid-twentieth century. Issue number 49 was released in the late 1970s, a period when the character had transitioned from a cinematic opening sequence icon to a robust merchandising and print media franchise. The stories were intended to capitalize on the character's silent, slapstick appeal, translating the visual gags of the Friz Freleng cartoons into a static, sequential art format.

The design of these comics focused on bright, accessible color palettes and clean line work that mimicked the aesthetic of DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' animation style. While the writing team and illustrators for specific issues like number 49 often operated under house names or remained uncredited in the tradition of mid-century mass-market comics, the series was designed as a lighthearted product for children. It was received as a standard newsstand comic of its era, serving as a functional piece of pop culture ephemera rather than an artistic milestone in the comic book medium.
