Where it came from
The Sandman Presents: Bast #2 was published in 2003 as part of a three-issue miniseries spinning out of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed Sandman universe. This series focuses on the Egyptian cat goddess Bast, a character who appeared sporadically in the core Sandman run. It explores her transition from a powerful deity of ancient myth to a somewhat diminished figure struggling to adapt to the modern world, reflecting the overarching themes of legacy and cultural evolution that characterize the Vertigo imprint's approach to mythological characters.
The issue features a script by Caitlin R. Kiernan, a writer known for her dark, atmospheric prose, and interior art by Joe Bennett. The series was designed to provide a deeper character study of Bast, balancing her divine nature with the mundane realities of contemporary life. Upon release, the miniseries was generally well-received by fans of the Sandman mythos for its expansion of the supporting cast and its commitment to the established tone of the darker corners of the DC/Vertigo shared universe.
