The Sandman Presents: Thessaly - Witch for Hire #3

Thessaly - Witch for Hire, published by Vertigo in 2004, emerged from the expansion of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman universe. This four-issue miniseries focuses on the enigmatic Thessaly, an ancient witch who played a pivotal role in the later arcs of the original series. The project was written by Bill Willingham, who utilized his background in crafting complex, morally ambiguous fantasy figures to flesh out her solitary and dangerous life following her departure from the Dreaming.

The visual identity of the series was defined by artist Shawn McManus, whose ethereal and sometimes jarring illustration style complemented the character's long-lived, supernatural perspective. Issue #3 continues the narrative arc following the protagonist as she navigates contemporary occult threats. While it served as a niche character study rather than a mainstream cornerstone, it is noted by fans for maintaining the dark, sophisticated tone established by Vertigo’s flagship titles of the era.
