The Sensational She-Hulk #26

The Sensational She-Hulk #26, published in 1991, arrived during a pivotal period for the character under the creative influence of John Byrne. This series was famously defined by its meta-fictional humor and fourth-wall-breaking narratives, which departed significantly from the tone of traditional Marvel superhero titles. This specific issue features a cover and story by Byrne that continue the series' signature approach of self-awareness and satirical commentary on the comic book industry.

The art and writing style of this era were highly regarded for blending classic superhero action with a distinct, comedic sensibility that was ahead of its time. Byrne, who both wrote and illustrated the issue, leaned into the character’s unique position as a protagonist who understood she was in a comic book, allowing for a creative freedom that was rarely seen in the main Marvel continuity. While the series was often seen as an experimental outlier at the time of its release, it has since gained a cult following for its wit and pioneering structural techniques.
