Where it came from
Published in July 1992, The Sensational She-Hulk #40 arrived during a period of creative experimentation for Marvel's Fourth-Wall-breaking heroine. This issue continued the title's signature meta-fictional tone, which had been firmly established by writer and artist John Byrne in the preceding years. By this point in the series, the book leaned heavily into satirical humor, often featuring Jennifer Walters directly addressing the reader or commenting on the absurdities of the comic book medium itself.
The cover and interior pages maintain the classic, vibrant aesthetic associated with the series' long-running run. Created at a time when the character was defined by her wit and autonomy rather than strictly superhero tropes, the issue exemplifies the playful, self-referential style that gained a dedicated cult following. While the series eventually concluded after issue #60, this era remains significant for cementing She-Hulk's unique voice within the Marvel Universe.
