Where it came from
Published in July 1989, The Sensational She-Hulk #4 was part of the series written and illustrated by John Byrne, who played a pivotal role in defining Jennifer Walters' character. This specific issue is well-regarded for continuing Byrne's signature meta-fictional approach, in which the protagonist frequently breaks the fourth wall to address the reader, a stylistic choice that was revolutionary for Marvel Comics at the time.
The series emerged from Byrne's desire to lean into the lighter, comedic tone established in the character's earlier solo runs. He intentionally pushed the boundaries of the medium, utilizing the panel borders and page layouts as narrative tools. Critics and readers noted this as a bold departure from traditional superhero storytelling, cementing the title as a cult favorite for its clever subversion of comic book tropes and its sharp, self-aware humor.
